Cataract (part 3)

Lens displacement as a way of getting rid of cataracts was used until the 17th century. It was then that the doctors suggested not to displace, but to remove the lens. It was a kind of progress, but the negative consequences often could not be avoided.

After operations, patients faced a persistent increase in pressure inside the eyes, damage, inflammation of the tissues of the organs of vision, retinal detachment.

The effectiveness of the operation was approximately 40%.

The next leap in the surgical treatment of cataracts was made by the French scientist and ophthalmologist Jacques Daviel. In 1747, he proposed to remove not the entire lens, but only the nucleus and the lens mass, and to leave the back part, which was not subjected to changes.

So a natural barrier was maintained between the parts of the eye. And, at the same time, the clouded mass that interfered with normal vision was removed. A person left the doctor sighted when he came in practically blind.

Modern ophthalmologists claim that this particular operation is the pearl of eye surgery. It is she who speaks about the increased skill of eye doctors. It was she who strongly influenced the progress in the field of cataract surgery.

Now is the time to mention the amazing discovery of Sir Harold Ridley. He conceived the idea of creating an artificial lens back in the 30s of the 20th century. But then the position did not allow him to do full-scale research.

The war ended, and he immersed himself in the tasks that interested him and their solutions. Scientists treated his efforts to find an artificial replacement for the natural lens in different ways - someone was hostile, someone was indifferent, someone was enthusiastic.

Most ophthalmologists did not want to go beyond the usual removal of the lens. Implantation of a foreign body seemed to them dangerous and hopeless.

The first attempt to implant an artificial lens in a person instead of a removed one with a cataract dates back to November 29, 1949 (London).

According to available data, a lens was extracted from the patient's eye that day, but the doctor immediately removed it. The second implantation took place on February 8, 1950, i.e. a few months later. It is the second date that is historical.

The first artificial lens was made as similar as possible to the natural one, made of plastic. But, due to the difference in the refraction of light by different materials, the patient got quite strong myopia. In the future, the problem, of course, was solved.
